This goes hand in hand with her recent reading and current role model of Malala Yousafzai. The theme for this year’s Global Action Award is “Increasing Girls’ Access to Education.

Although you need only complete 1 requirements, Maya selected to do #1, #3, a variation on #5, and #6.

#1: Talk to the girls in your troop about how each one of you gets to school. Maybe some girls walk with a parent or older sibling, and some ride the bus. Or maybe some girls are home-schooled and don’t need to travel at all! Can you think of ideas for ways to help get girls to school safely in places that don’t have school buses?
Maya and the girls in her troop are all homeschooled. She noted that girls can school anytime, anywhere, even in their pajamas or while laying in bed! She loves the idea that we can go everywhere or nowhere at all. We contrasted this to the other ways girls school in this area (public or private) and how they get there (walk, ride in a car, bussed).

#3: Interview a woman in your life—it could be your mom, another relative, or a family friend—about what it was like to be a girl in school when she was young. Were girls treated differently than boys? Were they encouraged to move on to study the same kinds of subjects? Were they encouraged to pursue the same kinds of careers? Does she think things have changed since then? If so, how? Are there other things that you think still need to change?
Maya and I talked about school when I was a little girl. I told her that, especially with sports and clubs, girls and boys were treated differently. There were sports that girls were not allowed to try out for (like Football and Wrestling) and that had no equivalent (as in baseball AND softball both being offered). Girls were encouraged to focus our studies on the arts and humanities, while boys were directed more towards science and math. Although this was the case, I do remember being encouraged to pursue whatever career or vocation I wanted, regardless of it's educational background. Things have definitely changed, now that girls have significant access to STEM programs and classes. That being said, I think that our educational system is flawed because we should offer opportunities and focus to all students while teaching to their strengths and weaknesses, regardless of gender or ability.

#5: (Variation) Did you know that girls face challenges related to education in many countries around the world, including the United States? Read a book that focuses on girls’ education in the United States, and talk about it with your Girl Scout friends. You might look at Also Known As Harper by Ann Haywood Leal, or choose a book of your own.
Maya is currently reading and loving her biography on Malala Yousafzai.

#6: What if, as girls, you were not allowed to go to school? What would your life be like now? What would you do with your time? What might your life be like in the future?
Maya drew a picture that showed all of the things she wants to pursue (being a lifeguard, a police officer, and a doctor), and then how she would feel if she were not allowed to learn and do those things.
Due to her grade level, she will be bridging to Juniors in the fall, and she wanted to make sure that she completed everything in the 16 months she would be a Brownie. So her My Promise, My Faith Year 1 was completed in 2016 and her Year 2 was just completed!
They are:

1. Find out where your customers area.
2. Talk to some customers.
3. Practice handling money and making change.
4. Role play good customer relations.
5. Thank your customers.

1. Find out where your customers area: Talk to your family or friends about who might want to buy GS cookies.
Maya created a list of people to contact: long distance family via email and social media, local family through meetings and phone calls, neighbors within our block that we know well (3 families) by walking over and visiting in person, and church family (through a church cookie booth.)

2. Talk to some customers: Practice telling customers about the cookies you are selling.
After a run through talking to her little brothers, Maya practiced talking to her grandmothers (in person and on the phone) about the different cookies we are selling. This skill was reinforced at the 2017 Cookie Rally.

3. Practice handling money and making change: practice making change.
As part of her homeschool math assignment, we have been using cookies as our math problems and focusing on adding, subtraction, and multiplication.

4. Role play good customer relations: role play what to do when a customer asks for advice about which cookies to buy, a customer tells you she used to be a GS, and a customer says she will return to buy cookies.
While talking to her grandmothers and mom, Maya role played these scenarios.

There are five parts to earning the Brownie Dancer badge. They are:

1. Warm up and get moving.
2. Try a new dance.
3. Take to the floor like a dancer.
4. Make up your own dance.
5. Show your moves.

1. Warm up and get moving: Get flexible.
Girls had a 10 minute yoga session that went over flexibility and stretching, as well as the Sun Salutation.

2. Try a new dance: Try "dancersize".
Girls learned a 3 minute Zumba routine. They practiced it multiple times before performing it like pros!

3. Take to the floor like a dancer: Pretend you're a Girl Scout in the 1930s.
Girls learned the following activities: a curtsy, a deep curtsy, proper carriage in walking, and the correct standing position.

4. Make up your own dance: Use dance to tell a story.
Girls each chose a story to tell. They were given music and then told their stories through dance and movement.

5. Show your moves: Throw a dance party.
Girls learned the Macarena, The Twist, and Conga, as they danced their way into a new badge!

Here are our girls in action! Unfortunately, because we were all in action, there aren't too many pics of every step.

Maya will also be re-earning this as part of our Service Unit's Journey in a Day program in late April, but we did the self paced WOW program provided by the Academy of Natural Science in Philadelphia, and she had a great time. To be honest, I thought the Academy was awesome, but found the WOW program a bit lacking. It was educational and fun- no doubt about that- but it seemed like pieces were missing. That being said, all of my kids learned something, and Maya will redo the journey as part of a Brownie group at our JIAD program, so whatever it seems like was missed, she will get. Overall, I highly recommend it.
When Maya and I discovered that the Girl Scouts of Western OK had a badge that was tribal in nature, we knew that we had to do it! We did adapt it to reflect the tribes of Pennsylvania (instead of Oklahoma) but it was a wonderful and fun learning experience about something that is important to our family.

The full requirements for completing the DINE badge can be found here. The four activities that Maya selected to earn this badge were:

#1: On a map of the state of Pennsylvania, show the tribes that originally inhabited the territory that is now PA and the tribes that are presently represented by large concentrations in PA.

#6: Learn about the food eaten by the tribal peoples in PA, past and present. Prepare one of the foods.

#8. Learn about the crafts done by tribal people in day to day living. Pick one of these (leather, beading, pottery, basketry, etc) and learn how to do it.

#9: Learn about the differences in the dress and homes of PA tribal peoples.

We took a trip to the Reading Museum to complete the majority of these requirements and to supplement our learning experience.

For #1, Maya used her research skills to find information online about the tribes native to Pennsylvania. We learned about the earliest tribes and who still remains. In our area, the Lenape people still hold programs and meetings. This area was traditionally home to the Erie tribe, Iroquois tribes (Seneca and Oneida), Lenape tribe, Munsee tribe, Shawnee tribe, Susquehannock tribe and later the Nanticoke tribe.

http://www.native-languages.org/pennsylvania.htm

For #6, we chatted about how the different tribes would have different food tastes based on where they lived, what was common in the area, etc. What is a common food amongst tribes throughout North America, are corn cakes. These simple cakes are made from stone ground meal, fat, and liquid. For our recipe, we used stone ground cornmeal, buttermilk (although a more traditional choice would have been water or buffalo milk, or, possibly, after European settlers, sheep or cattle), chicken egg (a traditional source would have been duck eggs), and some PA honey. Traditionally, animal or fish fat would have greased a hot stone and they would have been quickly fried on either side. We used a hot griddle to symbolize the stone and oil to replace the animal fat.
#8, and #9, we learned about food, culture, and homes of PA tribal peoples at the Reading Museum. As part of (what appeared to be) a permanent exhibit on world cultures, there was a great learning segment on the different tribes of North America, with some PA specific items, that included things about food, dress, culture, crafts, and homebuilding. It was a well rounded and great experience.
There are 5 requirements for earning the Brownie "Celebrating Community" badge. They are:

1. Explore community symbols.
2. Sing together.
3. Follow the parade.
4. Be a landmark detective.
5. Join a celebration.

1. Explore community symbols: go on a flag hunt.
Maya and her Daisy sister (who is now a Brownie as well), "M" went on a flag hunt throughout Lansdale Borough. Over a mile, the girls found 116 American flags and countless military, novelty, and other country flags!

3. Follow the parade: join a parade.
Maya took part in the 66th annual Lansdale Mardi Gras parade to celebrate Thanksgiving and Christmas. She was also the Flag Bearer for the Service Unit!

4. Be a landmark detective: Tour a landmark that honors the past.
Maya toured the Jenkins Homestead, one of the founding buildings in Lansdale. It is now home to our Historical Society.

1. Warm up your inventor's mind
2. Find lots of ways to solve the same problem
3. Make a needs list
4. Solve a problem
5. Share your invention

1. Warm up your inventor's mind: Come up with fun and different things you can make from circles.
Using the Think in Circles exercise in the badge workbook, Maya created circles! Lots of circles!

2. Find lots of ways to solve the same problem: Making music.
With her brothers, Maya created music from a variety of household items. They:
tapped spoons together,
banged pots and pans,
banged lid tops,
knocked spoons against the wall,
strummed runner bands,
knocked lids against pots,
tapped chopsticks together,
hit wooden spoons against each other,
closed doors of cabinets to the beat of a song,
tapped water glasses with spoons,
turned a metal bowl upside down and tapped with hands for drums

3. Make a needs list: Mornings.
Maya created a list of things for her parents based on their morning routines and what they need to get done each morning.

4. Solve a problem: Mind Map.
Using the Mind Map exercise in the badge workbook, Maya identified a household problem (a broken cabinet door in the kitchen) and created solution ideas.

5. Share your invention: Draw it.
Maya drew out her idea for how to fix the kitchen cabinets and discussed it with her dad. They talked about why the wood glue was a good idea but that, due to the type of break and age of the cabinet, that her plan wouldn't work and new cabinets need to be bought.Michelehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17681333723382119281noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6572853575313598097.post-63454482068707752362016-11-03T08:38:00.000-07:002016-11-03T08:38:16.706-07:00Brownie Money Manager BadgeThere are five steps to the Brownie "Money Manager" badge. They are:
1. Shop for elf items with your elf doll.
2. Go grocery shopping.
3. Go clothes shopping.
4. Get ready for school.
5. Have some fun.

1. Shop for elf items with your elf doll: Go shopping at home.
We created our own little imaginary store and the kids practiced their math skills as part of our homeschooling. Maya dressed her paper elf doll and then proceeded to do the requirements for this section. For $10, she bought dog food ($10). For $15, she bought chicken ($5), fish ($4), bread ($3), and PB ($3). For $20, she bought cookies ($4), eggs ($2), cheese ($4), baked beans ($2), elfaroni ($2), spaghetti sauce (#$2), lettuce ($2), and tomatoes ($2).

2. Go grocery shopping: Shop at a store/on paper/online.
Maya often is my grocery helper so we created a hybrid of the requirements so that she could shop and compare stores, paper, and online. For her list and prices, she used the online/in store prices of our local Wegman's.
Apple (lb) $2.69
Oranges (5) $4
Blueberries (18oz) $28.99
Grapes (2lbs) $4.58
Kiwi (lb) $3.99
TOTAL: $24.25
Budget: $30
Remainder: $5.75

3. Go clothes shopping: Browse through catalogs/shop secondhand.
We did a hybrid of this. Maya went with me to the secondhand store to shop and she helped me create 10 outfits for $60 total. In addition, she took her paper elf doll shopping on paper, creating a few outfits for $30 or less.

4. Get ready for school: You have $15 total.
Because we homeschool and I buy their supplies at the start of the year, Maya did faux shopping with her paper elf doll for items that are standard to our supplies: notebooks, pencils, erasers, and a backpack. She had the following as her price list:
5 notebooks $5
12 pencils $2
5 erasers $1
backpack $15
With her $15, she was only able to buy notebooks, pencils, and erasers. She would have needed $23 to add in the backpack.

5. Have some fun: Go to the movies with a friend.
Maya compared 2 theaters (the closest Regal and the small, independent theater our family always goes to, The Grand) for tickets and concessions for 4 people.

The Regal:
4 tickets: $32
snacks (small popcorn and small soda each): $40
Total: $72

The Grand:
4 tickets: $12
snacks (kid pack of small popcorn, small soda or water, and candy): $14
Total: $26
They are:

1. Get to know your body.
2. Eat and play in a healthy way.
3. Find out how your body works.
4. Know what to do if something bugs you.
5. Meet a health helper.

Maya completed this badge as part of the GSEP "Halloween Yoga Adventure" program.

From the description:
Come celebrate the magic of Halloween through yoga! Use your imagination as you take a yoga adventure full of harvest essentials. Learn fun yoga poses, make a fun craft, and enjoy some serious relaxation. Costumes are encouraged but optional!
(unfortunately, my photos failed to upload and I had already deleted them from my phone :( )

Additionally, Maya completed Step 1: Get to know your body: Color in your hair, eyes, and favorite clothes. In the Brownie handbook packet for "My Best Self", there is a My Elf Self project, where girls create their "elf" self.

Maya decided to do this activity as part of her homeschool art lesson. We measured her limbs and height, and she learned how to do so. She enjoyed looking at her Brownie sash to color in the sash she put on her elf self.
Although no badges were earned, girls could have used the activities (archery, nature hike, nature art) to fulfill other requirements. Because Maya loves archery, we've decided to complete the requirements of the Girl Scouts of Southern NJ's Brownie Archery Try-It. (You can find the requirements here and purchase the badge here.) Maya completed the following steps of the requirements:

4. Demonstrate the correct way of pulling an arrow from the target, and picking it up from the ground.

5. Demonstrate the correct stance used for shooting
6. Know the safety zone.
7. Know and follow the archery range whistle commands.

Here is a video of her at SR and SR, and here is today at MH.
She completed most of these at the Courageous Campers program at the Shelly Ridge camp, but then repeated and expanded upon them at the Brownie Explorer program today at Mountain House camp. Funny enough, she completed the requirements of the Cadette Archery badge.

They are:
1. Explore family stories.
2. Know where your family is from.
3. Make a story tree.
4. Find an object that means something to your family.
5. Share your family story.

Step 1. Explore family stories: Read 2 stories staring families.
Maya handled story time for her two younger brothers. She selected 2 books from the library that she felt talked about families. "Mad and Mommy" and "Lola Reads to Leo", then she read to her brothers during our homeschool time. Afterwards, she and I discussed the families in the story and how they are similar/different to our family.

Step 2. Know where your family is from: Ask about a family recipe.
For her youngest brother's birthday party, Maya helped to make "Mimi's Party Punch", a punch that her maternal grandmother has been making for family parties since the 1970s (and a recipe she learned from her aunt). It's something we make for every party. (I have no pictures because I was too busy getting the party ready). It's a simple punch, but one that we enjoy because of all the memories.
Mimi's Party Punch
-1 large can of pineapple juice
-1 bottle of 100% juice fruit punch
-1 liter of ginger ale
-1 cup of orange juice
-2 pints of different sorbet (we like lemon and mango) (originally, this was sherbet, but I have a child allergic to food dye, so we use natural sorbet instead)
To keep it cold, I also like to add frozen fruit.
Mix and serve! It's that easy!

Step 3. Make a story tree: Use the story tree.
Because we have more family than the tree allowed, I copied and pasted over the book tree. This allowed Maya to make sure her siblings were all included. While she colored the pictures, she asked me to write down the fun facts that she chose. Here were her selections:
MAYA- Favorite color is blue
ROBERT- Nickname is Bobby
NICHOLAS- Favorite food was pork chops*
SOPHIA- Favorite food was kielbasa and pierogi*
ALEXANDER-Nickname is Alex*
MICHAEL- Loves to eat superhero cheese
LUCAS- Favorite food is milkies
NEW BABY- Will be born around Mother's Day 2017**
DADDY- Likes "knock knock" jokes
MOMMY- Favorite thing to do is write

Step 4. Find an object that means something to your family: Talk about an object that has been handed down.
Maya learned about a ring that is special to our family. Her great-grandmother, known as Yaya (Greek yaiyai for Grandmother), gave me a pearl ring before she died that, one day, I'll pass on to Maya. The ring was made by Maya's great-grandfather's brother, who made jewelry, as a gift for her great-grandfather to give to her great-grandmother. The filigree was all done by hand and the large pearl is real. The ring itself is invaluable, both for the pearl and for the history. Maya was so excited to be able to put the ring on and talk about Yaya and how the ring came to be mine.

Step 5. Share your family story: Make a family crest.
Maya created a coat of arms using the webpage http://makeyourcoatofarms.com. It was free and I recommend it for this step of the badge. She had a lot of fun selecting the color, motto, and values. She chose "Friendship and Honor" as our family motto, and selected the following 4 values: animal loving, brave, creative, and fair.

1. Find out what care different pets need.
2. Keep a pet comfy.
3. Help a pet stay healthy and safe.
4. Make a pet feel loved.
5. Feed a pet.

1. Find out what care different pets need: Play bingo at a pet store.
We went to our local pet store, where Maya chatted with staff (including a former Girl Scout!) and learned about the animals the store had, how to take care of them, what they eat, and what animal would be a good fit for our family. Maya found out about dogs, hamsters, bunnies, fish, cats, and birds. (And now, she is desperate to add a dog to our family!)

2. Keep a pet comfy: make a cozy sleeping space for a pet.
Maya read through her pet book and then using our pretend (stuffed animal) dog, she made a doggie bed using towels, blankets, and a box, and then made a chew/play toy out of one of her dad's old shirts.

3. Help a pet stay healthy and safe: all three (adapted).
Maya created a pamphlet on how to keep dogs healthy (choice 1), how dogs get exercise (choice 2), and how to keep dogs looking good (step 3). She had to go to the library to get information about the options and then, over the course of a week, read about dog care and needs, and worked on her trifold brochure.

4. Make a pet feel loved: Learn about how three different kinds of pets communicate their feelings.
We did a take on this. Instead of finding out about three different pets, Maya was really interested in learning about PPD in dogs. The dog she fell in love with at the pet store had postpartum depression. Maya had heard this phrase before, because I've suffered with PPD, mildly with her younger brother and to a greater extent with her youngest brother, and she wanted to know all about it in dogs. (This dog had even another check mark because she and I share birthdays.)

So, we came home from the store and researched PPD in dogs and we found out several things. Like humans, dogs lose interest in food, may sleep excessively, and may not bond with their puppies (which may be a precursor or promote PPD since the puppies may be taken away). Some dogs may completely ignore their puppies or "overmother" them. As we read this, Maya was sad; she wanted to bring home Arcadia even more. But she was happy to hear that there is treatment for PPD in dogs. (Of course, part of how Maya wants to treat her, is to adopt her!)

5. Feed a pet: Make a pet budget for two pets for a month.
We decided to make a monthly pet budget for a fish and a dog. Maya was blown away by how expensive it is. This was her list of needs for the month.

Dog: water, food, dog biscuits, vitamins, one toy per month, shampoo/soap, flea/tick collar
Dog: Water: Free (from the tap at home)
Dog Food: $48 for 30lb bag times 1 bag/month = $48
Dog Biscuits: $8 for 20oz times 1 bag/month = $8
Dog Treats: $6 for 10oz times 2 bags/month = $12
Dog Vitamins:$9 for a bottle times 1 bottle/month = $9
Dog Toy: $8
Dog Soap/Shampoo: $17/ bottle times 1 bottle/month = $17
Dog Flea/Tick Collar: $40 (but lasts for 8 months so 2 per year $80 divided by 12 months) = $7
Total: $109

Beta Fish: water, food
Beta Fish Water: $4/gal times 4 gal/month = $16
Beta Food: $2/ bottle times 1 bottle/month = $2
Total: $18/month

BEYOND THE BADGE:
We explored animals that are wild but can be domesticated, such as chickens, goats, sheep, ponies, reptiles, and birds at the Elmwood Park Zoo. The kids talked about different ways that life in the wild would differ from life in a home.

Note: By far, this was the most difficult badge for us thus far. We don't have pets and, at this point, don't foresee having any in the near future. Nor do we have regular access to pets. This badge required a bit of adaptation and some thinking outside of the box.Michelehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17681333723382119281noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6572853575313598097.post-65655663018485839372016-09-20T10:58:00.002-07:002016-09-20T10:58:21.597-07:00Brownie My Great Day BadgeThere are 5 requirements for earning the Brownie "My Great Day" badge. They are:

1. Start your day right.
2. Sort out your stuff.
3. Make homework a breeze.
4. Plan ahead.
5. Help others get organized.

1. Start your day right: Lay out your clothes, Make your bed.
Maya decided to do both of these activities. She checked the weather app on her tablet to look at the weather for the next day and, before bed, she laid out an appropriate outfit. In addition, she made her bed and made it a goal to make her bed every morning when she gets up. She also helped her brothers make their beds.

2. Sort out your stuff: Organize your clothes
Every season, I go through the kids closets to box up clothes they can possibly wear next year or to use as hand me downs, to look at what to keep, and to bag up to give away. Maya and I went through her closet together, making piles to either bag up and give away or to keep in her closet. We ended up with 2 trash bags worth of giveaways and she went with me to drop the clothes in the Drop Off bin.

3. Make homework a breeze: Create your own homework space, Make a homework station.
As homeschoolers, we eschew homework. :) That being said, Maya has a chair and bookcase in her room where she does her reading and some of her independent tablet work. She cleaned up that area to make it more functional. She also organized the reading nook downstairs. Downstairs, in our homeschool room/playroom, Maya organized the table where she and her brothers work on homeschool assignments.

4. Plan ahead: Be a family grocery helper.
One of Maya's weekly activities/chores/errands is to come with me to the Farmer's Market. She used our standard "needs" list to shop and to make sure that our staples were in stock. (She also took the opportunity to chow down on some gelato and the stand put her picture in their newsletter.!)

5. Help others get organized: Help a relative, friend, or neighbor.
Maya cleaned up and organized our family room and homeschool room/playroom. She also encouraged her brothers to help her clean up.
They are:

1. Make friendly introductions.
2. Show friends you care.
3. Share favorite activities.
4. Learn how to disagree.
5. Practice Friendship.

1. Make friendly introductions: introduce yourself.
Maya went to an indoor playland with her grandmother, where she made new friends. Although she is shy and has anxiety, Maya often tries to make new friends. This badge has encouraged her to introduce herself to new people. Today, she met a group of 3 new kids and was able to talk to them about homeschooling, girl scouts, and playing.

2. Show friends you care: give something special to a friend.
Maya drew a picture of Rainbow Dash from MLP, the favorite pony of her BFF (who is also a Daisy scout). She addressed an envelope and then hand delivered the picture.

3. Share favorite activities: share a favorite activity with a friend.
Maya invited me to go to her favorite spot downtown (our local Starbucks) for an after dinner coffee. She even offered to use the Starbucks giftcard that she received for her birthday to pay for our treats, as a thank you for my helping her clean her room.

4. Learn how to disagree: find kind words.
Maya made a list of phrases that are kind and can be used to compliment or diffuse a situation.
"I'm sorry"
"Great job"
"I forgive you"
"I love you"
"You're really helpful"
"How can I help?"
"You look nice today"
"Do you want to play?"

5. Practice friendship: Go to a dance or art class, sports game, camp, or other activity.
Maya attended the GSEP event "Courageous Campers".

You can earn this pin each year that you’re a Brownie. You’ll find that Girl Scouting and your faith have a lot in common! Complete these 5 steps to earn the pin.
1. Choose one line from the Girl Scout Law. Find a story, song or poem from your faith with the same ideas. Talk with your family or friends about what that line of the Law and your choice have in common.

I will do my best to be… COURAGEOUS AND CARING

“Glory in the Cross” (the Good Friday words, especially verse 2)

Let us ever glory in the cross of Christ who redeems us with his blood. Let us tell the story of the cross of Christ and the power of his saving love. Like a lamb he was slain; he carried our shame, to show us the mercy of God. Let us ever glory in the cross of Christ and the triumph of God’s great love.

Let us bring our burdens to the cross of Christ who has known our sorrow and tears. IN the great compassion of the heart of Christ, God had walked in our hopes and fears. He was mocked and betrayed, deserted by friends, and banished to die among thieves. Let us ever glory in the cross of Christ and the triumph of God’s great love.

Let us kneel in homage at the cross of Christ where we see God’s human face. We behold the Maker of the sun and stars as he hangs on the throne of grace. As we share in his pain, his sorrow and shame, our hearts will be tested in fire. Let us ever glory in the cross of Christ and the triumph of God’s great love.

Maya can be seen singing verse 2 of the Good Friday words here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3o3eji-0g5Q

2. Find a woman in your own or another faith community and ask her how she tries to use that Law in her life.

Maya emailed her Aunt Eileen, who is the music director at our church.

Dear Aunt Eileen I am earning my My Promise, My Faith pin and am asking for your help. My favorite part of the Girl Scout Law is I will do my best to be courageous and strong For part 2 of my pin can you tell me how you use that part of the girl scout law in your life and what that means to you as a Catholic. Thank you. Love, Maya

(The Response) Dear Maya, I am very proud of you for working to earn this pin. Thank you for asking me about being courageous and strong. I believe that as a Catholic and lover of Jesus I need to always try to do what is right in God's eyes. This takes courage because it might be more fun to do what I want sometimes! But then I think about how much God loves me and blesses me, and then I can't say No to Him. He gives me the strength to do His work through me. Love, Aunt Eileen

3. Gather at least 3 inspirational quotes by women that fit that line of the Girl Scout Law and put them where you can see them every day.

Maya selected 12 quotes from different female saints.

“If you are what you should be, you will set the whole world ablaze!” -St. Catherine of Sienna

“We always find that those who walked closest to Christ were those who had to bear the greatest trials.” -St. Teresa of Avila

“Love God, serve God; everything is in that.” -St. Clare of Assisi

“Whatever God gives and permits…he gives and permits it for our good.” -St. Catherine of Siena

“If you suffer with Him, you will reign with Him.” –St Clare of Assisi

“I am not afraid. I was born to do this.” –St. Joan of Arc

“Nothing great is ever achieved without much enduring” –St Catherine of Siena

“Jesus…my strength, fortify me.” -St. Faustina

“Apart from the cross, there is no other ladder by which we may get to heaven.” -St. Rose of Lima
“I am the handmaid of the Lord. Let it be done to me according to thy word.” -Blessed Virgin Mary

“The source of justice is not vengeance but charity.” -Saint Bridget of Sweden

“I know well that the greater and more beautiful the work is, the more terrible will be the storms that rage against it.” -St. Faustina

“Do not allow yourselves to be disheartened by any failure as long as you have done your best.” – St. Teresa of Calcutta

4. Make something to remind you of what you’ve learned.

Maya made a craft out of the quotes from #3. We colored one side of popsicle sticks, then taped a quote to the other side. Maya decorated a small jar with Brownie stickers and now the jar of inspiration to be courageous and strong sits next to her bed for prayer time.

5. Keep the connection strong. Talk with your friends and family about what you’ve learned about your faith and Girl Scouting. Show them what you’ve made!

1. Sing everywhere
2. Celebrate Juliette Low's birthday
3. Share sisterhood
4. Leave a place better than you found it
5. Enjoy Girl Scout traditions

Step 1. Sing Everywhere: Make up your own song based on nature.
Maya created her own song and then we recorded her singing it. The words to her song are:
"My Nature Song."
-By Maya
I love nature.
Yes, I do.
Yes, I really do love nature.
I love the trees and flowers.
I love the birds that sing.
I love the bees and butterflies that pollinate the flowers.
Nature is beautiful, outside in the dark and light.
I love the sounds of the bees buzzing
And the birds that sing
And the flutter of wings of the butterflies.
I love to see bees pollinating flowers
And the butterflies flying by, sucking up nectar.
My favorite season is spring so I can plant flowers.
Spring makes me think of all the pretty things in nature.
I love nature.
Yes, I do.

Maya writing her song.

Step 2. Celebrate Juliette Low's birthday: Throw a birthday bash.
Maya decided to help me plan and throw our Service Unit's JGL Birthday Halloween Party. More information about this event can be found here.

Step 3. Share sisterhood: Make a team flag.
Maya and her twin brother created a "family flag". They decided on images that represented each of us (pen and paper for Mommy the writer, a scientific beaker for Daddy the scientist, a turtle for the TMNT obsessed Maya, a rainbow (B's favorite) for her twin, an Elmo for her toddler brother, a bottle of milk for her baby brother, and 3 crosses topped with halos for her three older siblings who died). It was amazing to watch them work.

Step 4. Leave a place better than you found it: A better room or home.
On her own, Maya encouraged her brothers to join her in cleaning up our playroom/homeschool room. They worked with their dad and surprised mom.

Step 5. Enjoy Girl Scout traditions: Follow in a Girl Scout's footsteps.
Maya and I talked as part of our homeschooling about what it was like when I was a scout in the 1980s. We often chat about this when we are completing badges that I worked on when I was a kid. It was a longer conversation that normal, and was neat to hear about her scouting experiences as I remembered my own.Michelehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17681333723382119281noreply@blogger.com0
